So we wished Gemma Ward a happy 22nd birthday yesterday and lo and behold, she acknowledges our greeting (kind of) by making a cameo appearance with the paparazzi! She was seen at the West Village yesterday with a couple of friends, rocking aviators, a leopard print coat and a neon-pink necklace, trying to hail a cab. Standing next to her midget average friends, Gemma towers over them like a giantess. I guess we just took her stature for granted with all those backstage photos of her standing next to other giantess.
It has been almost two years since Gemma escaped from the spotlight to live a normal life…and it has also been just as long since we’ve seen photographs of her that we as fans were starting to speculate if she was still alive (okay, not all her fans, maybe just me). It is certainly nice to see her out and about, looking like a normal person (not really, because she is still an iconic goddess!)
So she’s not as rail thin as she used to be? I happen to think she looks happy and healthy—healthier than she probably ever was while modeling. I don’t think she should kill herself trying to lose that extra weight unless she really wants to. She doesn’t really need to “make a comeback” in my opinion. She’s already left her mark in the world and now she just wants to live her life like everyone else. More power to her. Or maybe if she wants to continue with her acting, I would greatly support that! I loved The Black Balloon (but to be honest, I just fast-forwarded through The Strangers—she really doesn’t appear in that movie too much).
So cheers to our beloved alien/doll faced Gemma, the youngest fashion icon of our generation.
